About Us
According to the latest Census, the Asian Pacific American population in Illinois numbers approximately 428,213, or 3.4% of the statewide population. Approximately 71,469 Asian Pacific Americans reside in DuPage County, comprising 7.9% of DuPage County's population, with the bulk of the other 262,731 residents of Cook County, comprising 4.8% of Cook County's population. The 2000 Census shows that Asian Pacific Americans reside in Chicago in communities including West Rogers Park, Albany Park, Uptown, Armour Square and Bridgeport, and in suburban Cook County in communities including Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates and Skokie.
Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) are one of the fastest growing populations in the United States. In Illinois alone, APAs make up nearly 4% of the state population. Each Asian and Pacific Islander ethnic group brings its own history, language, and tradition, as well as a wide range of backgrounds, from new immigrants to multiple generations of U.S. citizens. As the numbers continue to increase, the Asian American Coalition f Chicago (AACC) seeks to unite and bring together this diverse ethnic group. Founded in 1984, the AACC represents over 16 different communities.
To celebrate the rich Asian American culture, the AACC sponsors two major events with a different Asian community playing host each year. The Lunar New Year Celebration is an opportunity to reflect on past accomplishments and recognize individuals for their great contributions. In 2009, the AACC will host it’s 26th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration. It is also in 2008, the AACC will put on the 10th Annual Asian American Festival. Held in May, during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the weeklong festive invites the general public to celebrate the past and unite together as we move towards the future.
